American Wormy Chestnut Carvings

Lance Lichtensteiger has been designing and sculpting wildlife for twenty years. His daughter, Wendy began learning the craft from her father in 2000, and has been carving with him since. The incredible likeness of their carvings is due mainly to the choice of material, American Wormy Chestnut. The chestnut, whose growth has been decimated due to a 1920's blight, has a wavy, feathery grain adding natural character and realism to each carving. Because the beauty and timelessness of the wood is equally important to them as the carving itself, it is stained rather than painted, and cracks and checks are left unfilled. Working with chestnut logs recycled mostly from old bridges and log cabins, the carvings are rough cut on a bandsaw and chiseled into shape. After a three step sanding process, the pieces are attached and mounted on a base. The legs are formed, the wood is stained, and a clear sealer applied bringing the sculptures to life.
