Sarah Gill holds a Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in wood design from East Carolina University. While in the School of Art there, she fell in love with the versatility of wood: the material, the challenge of the build, and the beauty of the color and texture which varies from species to species. Her highly creative spirit shows the influence of additional studies at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where she fine-tuned her love under master turner Jean-Francois Escoulen of Paris and wood carver and sculptor Jamie Russel of Canada. She was commissioned to produce a series of three large murals in the style of intarsia by the Outer Banks Commission for Wildlife Education. The murals depict wildlife and habitats indigenous to the Outer Banks and are on permanent exhibit in the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education next to the Whalehead Club in Corolla, NC. This project includes a maritime forest scene, and underwater scene and a saltwater marsh scene. The many steps involved in producing each panel allowed Sarah to incorporate her skill in design, research, layout and finishing. Currently, Sarah has established her own furniture business which is called “Funktional Art.” Her works are on display at the “Cooperative Art Gallery” in Kill Devil Hills, NC and in “The Wooden Feather” wildlife gallery and shop in Duck, NC. Although custom furniture is a part of Funktional Art, carvings, turnings, and other art works are a part of her portfolio and business. Creative designs as well as craftsmanship set Funktional Art apart from the ordinary. Funktional Art challenges the idea of what furniture can be, allowing art to function as an everyday usable object. |
